I get them higher by putting my front foot under the two bolts on the bottom and I flick almost by the nose and jump pretty high to stomp them and roll away easier

You are probably putting to much of your weight onto your front foot. Because its usually your back foot it become a habbit to shift your weight in its direction to balance. Focus on shifting your weight onto your back leg as you setup for the trick and you will have more controll of the flick
