What's a good way to help keep balance while going backwards? I always loose balance then swerve to the side.

If you slightly lift your back wheel when your about to turn out it will straighten you out a bit, it takes a few minutes of practice but it's really useful in the long run.

It's the way you look back you want to look under your armpits, not over your shoulder

One way to practice at the beginning is to do little hops while going backwards. And when you get comfortable with that you start to learn how to fakie without hops.
What helped me is to jump whenever I was about to turn out
Jump up and down while going backwards then try not to
