An upwind jump where you lay down the sail windwards.
How do it
A stylish trick that can be performed off a wave or flat water. In essence it’s an upwind jump where you lay down the sail windward.
1.
Pick up speed and choose some chop or a wave.
2.
Right before the jump, bear up — but not too hard! — by driving your heels into the side of the board. Begin closing the sail and shift your weight onto the center of the board.
3.
When popping off, pull in hard with your clew hand and push the sail with your mast hand, laying it down horizontally. To do this, look at the head of the sail. Once you feel the power on the other side of the sail, use it to jump, by leaning onto the sail and shifting your weight towards it.
4.
Continue driving the sail forward with your mast hand. At the peak of your jump, push down onto the sail with your clew hand, slowing down the rotation. Push the board away from you, turning your hips upward and bringing your extended back leg behind you.
5.
Return the sail to vertical position by moving it windward and pulling the board under you. Close the sail and land on the tail.
