Get some information about the spot, select beginner equipment, put on your wetsuit and come out on the water.
How do it
Inquire about the spot where you will be sailing. Check out the presence of coral, rocks, currents, the direction of wind. Select beginner equipment — a 200 litre dagger board and 3m2 sail. Put on your wetsuit and come out onto the water.
1.
Place your equipment onto the water, keeping the sail aimed downwind. Go in about knee deep. Position the board across the wind, and the sail downwind on the opposite side of the board. Pull down the dagger.
2.
Climb onto the center of the board, with your back to the wind. With your knees bent and back straight, begin to slowly raise the sail off the water by the uphaul, shifting your weight back. Draw yourself up by bringing your hips forward, while holding the sail at arm’s length.
3.
Grab the boom with your front hand, slightly bending your arm at the elbow. Now grab the boom with your back hand, at about shoulder width from your front arm, and pull it towards you slightly. This will close the sail, filling it with air. Start leaning back while pushing the sail slightly forward.
4.
If you open the sail by straightening your back arm, bending your front arm and leaning the sail down to the water, then the board will go upwind. If you close the sail by pulling in your back arm and bringing the sail forward, then your board will go downwind, i.e. bear away.
