I have the same problem, do you kick the board and just sort of fall over it?

You kick it, and your foot loses contact with the board as it flips. With your other foot (left or right, depending on whether you ride regular or goofy), you jump up a bit and make contact with the board as it finishes flipping, which corrects if you kicked it too hard. The board lands with you on it already, and your weight and momentum helps it land evenly on all four wheels.
