It is a position that you take standing on the board. When your left foot is in front, you are a natural-footed surfer; if it's more comfortable with your right foot in front, you are goofy-footed.
How do it
Once you begin catching waves and standing on the board, you'll be faced with the issue of balancing. Finding it is reasonably simple, if you know the fundamentals.
1.
When standing up on the board, try to keep your shoulders and hips straight. Hold the position they were in when you were still down on the board.
2.
Keep the soles of your feet firmly on the board and make sure they're perpendicular to the board. Your front feet can be at a 45 degree angle, but cannot be facing along the board.
3.
Rise with your head, not with your hips.
4.
When you were standing up, you're weight was on your arms. Now that you've swapped them with your front foot, keep your weight on it. This will give you more speed, and the faster you're going, the more stable you are.
5.
Don't straighten out all the way. Your legs, hips and back should always stay slightly bent.
6.
If none of this seems to help and the board is still trying to make you fall over, go with it. Allow yourself to tilt to the side and crouch down even lower. Place your arms on the board if you must.
7.
When standing up and riding the board, keep your eyes in the direction of movement, not on your feet.
