Popping up is when you have caught the wave and shift from the paddling position, which is lying on top of the board, to a standing, upright position.
How do it
After you catch a wave, you need to get up on your feet. Pay close attention and focus on learing this move, it will be the basis of all your future progress.
1.
Move on to standing up only once you've learned to catch a wave. You stand up when you're laying on the board and riding the wave.
2.
Before standing up, you need to decide which foot you'll be placing forward. If you've rding any kind of board before, you should already know the answer.
3.
Put the leash onto your back leg.
4.
Catch a wave and ride it while laying on the board.
5.
Place your hands onto the board, at chest high, so that your palms are under your shoulders.
6.
Step one. Begin to push up from the board. It's important not to simply go upwards, but also draw your entire body forward. Your entire weight should be supported by your arms.
7.
Step two. Place your back foot next to your front leg's knee. Try to keep your toe or heel in contact with the board. It's crucial that the entire side of your foot touches the board.
8.
Step three. Place your front foot between your arms. Do not take your hands off the board until your foot is firmly in place. Your toe should idealy be at about a 45 degree angle to the board. It can go across the board as well, just as long as it isn't going straight along the board.
9.
When placing your front foot forward, try not to break contact with the board. This will improve your stability.
10.
Now that you've placed both feet, you can finally stand up and take your arms off the board. When doing so, make sure you're leading with your head, not with your behind.
