The bottom turn is a basic move, and your success with future, more advanced tricks will depend on how well you can execute it. The bottom turn is it’s own element, but at the same time it is the building block of almost every trick you’ll encounter in the future.
1.
Ride down the wave, all the way to the trough.
2.
Squat down, shifting some of your weight away from your front leg, to your back.
3.
In frontside, extend your back arm towards the water surface. In backside, extend your front arm. In other words, use the arm closest to the water.
4.
The deeper you squat and the longer you stay in that position, the quicker and more vertical the resulting ascension. Different tricks will require different bottom turn intensities.
5.
While performing the trick, face the direction you’ll be moving in afterwards. This usually means forward and upward, or just upward.
6.
After pausing at the bottom of the wave, begin moving upward by gradually standing up.
