You grind on the inside edge of one skate, and on the outside edge of the trailing skate.
How do it
The basis of many an inline skating trick. Before doing this trick you should determine which foot you prefer as your front foot for grinding. To do this, stand up straight on a flat surface, bring your legs together and ask a friend to push you in the back — the leg you set forward first will be your leading leg. What you do is approach an obstacle, landing on the middle of your skates (the notch between the wheels — the royal groove). Knees should be bent during the grind, preferably in the direction of the back leg. If you’re a beginner, it might prove quite challenging, with your feet constantly flying out forward. Most often this occurs because the position of your body and your weight is shifted back.
1.
Ride up parallel to the obstacle.
2.
Jump and turn your feet 90 degrees.
3.
Keep them at shoulder width when you land on the obstacle.
4.
Try to evenly distribute your weight between both legs.
5.
Crouch down a bit, with your knees bend and parallel to the skate toes.
6.
Keep your eyes in the direction of movement, with your shoulders turned slightly in the direction of the grind.
7.
If you’re having trouble with the royal, try doing the ufo — i.e. a grind with your knees together and the souls of your feet apart.
